My First YouTube Video, Felt Like Skydiving Without A Parachute

My First YouTube Video, Felt Like Skydiving Without A Parachute

I finally filmed and published my first YouTube video as a civilian. It took me forever to push record.

I never could’ve imagined this fear of long form video would paralyze my creative mojo.

I’ve always been great with filming short form video up to two minutes. No problem. However, creating long form had me in a chokehold.

I thought I had it all figured out. I wrote down what I had to say ahead of time to make the process easier. Fail!

I planned to keep it simple and just talk. OMG! I would’ve rather run a 10k in 100 degree weather in Florida. I hate all of those things btw lol.

I just kept saying “I can do hard things. I can do hard things.”

I have to admit. I’m arrogant when it comes to content creation. I’ve studied it. I’ve produced it. I’ve managed it. I see it in my mind first then I create. I’ve even analyze the data behind when certain content does well and some don’t. You get where I’m going with this.

In theory this shouldn’t be hard for me. ( Fist in the air) And yet here we are.

Procrastinating, Tongue tied, Nervous, Scared AND wrestling with perfectionism to create and publish a video over ten minutes long. Lordt.

I am a novice yet again. I know it’s never too late to try or learn new things but this is really hard for me. I might need to call my therapist (drama queen)

How do I tell my story without getting lost in the story. I have to practice sharing my story by expanding on the highlights in my life.

I also have to remember that I’m not alone. My story is unique to me, but sharing my journey is part of what it means to be human.

Embrace all the good, the wild, the mess, the crazy and start yapping.

Here’s how it went down.

I had three false starts because I forgot to introduce myself. ( Amateur hour)

I had to fight rampant thoughts ( this is cringe, what will 41 subscribers think )

Once I finally gave into the fear of cringe. I said I will not stop even if I messed up. If I stop I could be here for hours watching day become night.

I filmed over 16-minutes in one take. Why? I’m not a super great editor. So for now, I’m keeping things simple.

I created the end card and YouTube banner in Canva. Though I used Cap Cut to edit the full video with the end card.

My plan was to use Canva but it wasn’t working out for me ( Canva used to be easier)

I created the thumbnail in Cap Cut. It was much easier.

I will use Cap Cut to complete post production moving forward.

Listen. YouTube content creation is not for the weak. I’ve always known this but in the past I produced YouTube videos with resources at my disposable.

This is a journey not only of self discovery but creating content in a way that I’ve never truly attempted before.

It’s a rough cut in so many ways, but I’m glad I put it out there. They say the first YouTube video is the worst so it can only go up from here.

“The YouTube video maker gets more out of making a video than you get out of watching it.” Seth Godin

Thanks Seth!

Here it is my first YouTube masterpiece:-)

It’s not perfect, so watch and/or listen when you get a chance. The thought of this will keep me up at night. Share your thoughts, tips, and reactions below!
