INSTA HAS CHANGED THEIR ALGO AGAIN

INSTA HAS CHANGED THEIR ALGO AGAIN

It’s Always Something…

Instagram launched in 2010 and it has been quite a ride on the algorithm roller coaster ever since. It was simply, you posted your favorite pictures in chronological order to share with your family and friends. Raise your hand if you shared pictures of your dog, or your favorite ice-cream, or even a fun pic of your night out with friends. Meeee!

The first pic on IG July, 2010.

The platform quickly evolved. The rise of influencers and fashionista’s filled Insta with their perfectly curated OOTD’s and color coded feeds. Yes I was one of them. I shared my outfit of the day religiously for five years. Though it felt like running a race I couldn’t win. The algo was in constant flux and I could not keep up. Burnout set it in and then Covid happened, which I welcomed tbh.

Like most Fortune 500 companies Meta’s drive to increase their bottom line led to head scratching changes. Posts were no longer chronological, the feed became a thing, Explore emerged, and then Meta launched IG stories and ultimately reels.

The algo became an ever present overlord that kept all creators hyped up on matcha lattes racing to ensure the algo favored their content. The algo determined what type of content you created and how often you should post. Still does.

Here’s what Adam Mosseri, Head of Instagram said in 2023. “Instagram doesn’t have one algorithm that oversees what people do and don’t see on the app. We use a variety of algorithms, classifiers, and processes, each with its own purpose.” Ah okay.

As of March 2026, Here’s How the Algo Works

You can now see what the algorithm thinks you want to watch.

IG now values how long your audience watches your reel by engagement or pausing.

You probably noticed more faces on reels. Founders and creators are sharing their story authentically straight to camera without the pomps and circumstance.

Serialize your content especially for reels. Consider it your personal Netflix series.

As a founder, this latest update can definitely make our lives easier.

I always say the easiest thing to do, is to record yourself telling your story or sharing something educational straight to camera.

Simplicity is key.

Here’s a few thought starters to take advantage of the IG algo to create your content like right now. One minute or a minute thirty at the most. BTW you can also repurpose across your other platforms.

Listen, at the end of the day. The algo is gonna algo. It’s good to be aware of it, but don’t let it stifle your creativity or keep you from being great.
