Can I Private Person Still Share Online?

Hi I’m Trish and I’m a very private person.

You wouldn’t know it because here I am on Substack lol.

My daily struggle as a content creator is asking myself how much do I share? Or I just don’t want to talk about it

If you’re a content creator, founder, corporate creator, or somewhere between you’ve probably grappled with this at some point.

We are all carving out our space on the world wide web by deciding what part of lives and lived experience has value or can be monetized.

Whatever side of the fence you land on it’s your decision and level of comfort.

I think depending on your age or where you are in your life personally or professional can impact how you want to be perceived and how much you want to share.

Pre-covid, I shared everything on Instagram. I was a micro influencer in Los Angeles and doing well by most standards.

I shared my style. I shared what I ate. I shared my friendships. I shared my travels. I shared my life in Los Angeles. I didn’t mind sharing it, that’s what you were supposed to do if you were a creator. I thought.

Then the world changed in 2020 and I know I’m not alone when I say this…the things that truly mattered in this life became much clearer.

I didn’t want to share my life in that way anymore it all seemed pointless and my “why” for creating in the first place completely changed.

I archived most of my IG and stopped posting consistently. You can still find most of it out there in internet land.

I don’t share at that level any longer. The world has changed drastically in the last six years.

Data privacy and just privacy in general is quickly becoming a thing of the past. With every click we decide who and what has access to us.

Opt out of AI using our image and content

Or just choosing to say less or nothing at all online ( this one is tricky )

I create in the present but think about my content in the future as well.

I’m just wired that way. These things are at the forefront of my thoughts when I create.

Is this something that can cause harm now or later?

Will I be embarrassed by this post in two or five years from now?

Does this feel real to who I am right now?

What am I giving up to share this content?

What can be extrapolated from what I share to harm me or my family and friends?

Paranoid or just cautious given the world we live in? You decide for yourself.

But I think it’s healthy and necessary and potentially naive if you’re not keeping your privacy top of mind.

We’ve all seen and heard about celebs who’s Twitter/X posts came back to haunt them. Or people who post videos and text that they had to take down for numerous reasons.

Those are extreme cases I know.

But if you’re a mindful and fully functional adult building your brand within corporate spaces or your business…

Ask yourself these questions before you post.
